On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.
Describe in detail what the site does, what service(s) it provides, and how it does so. In addition, cover the following items in your description in narrative form.
Is it a free site or does it have both free and paid features or just a trial version?
Poll everywhere has a combination of a free package and paid package. The free package allows teachers to use the texting poll with up to 40 responses with basic features such as PowerPoint and full web screen presentation. The paid subscription, which costs $50 per year, allows teachers to see grading reports on the polls and display the correct answer. A district can purchase a subscription for the entire district for $1000, which allows for over 200 responses and every feature the website has.
Does it have ads?
No, Poll Everywhere does not have any ads.
Does it allow sharing of content and collaboration? if so, how?
The $1000 district wide subscription allows for the collaboration of polls between teachers. The free and $50 program have no such feature.
Does it have a specific section for teachers and students?
The poll is created by the teacher and students respond to it via their mobile device, so the students are actually never accessing the website, only participating via their phone. The teacher is the only person that has access to the website.
Is it appropriate for use in schools?
As long as mobile devices are permitted in school, this Web 2.0 tool is appropriate for school. Teachers can use the webpage to set a poll for their students, and students can respond via their mobile device.
Is it appropriate for use by students? If so, what grade levels would it be appropriate for, in your estimation
I would say that it only becomes appropriate for students around middle school. I would hope that elementary students are not carrying cell phones around.
Educational Uses of Site
Teachers can use Poll Everywhere as bell work, questions during lecture, a mini quiz, or a closure question at the end of the period.
Review of Site
I think Poll Everywhere is an excellent tool to use in our 21st century classrooms. Nearly every single student in our secondary classrooms are carrying cell phone in their pocket, so why not put them to an educational use. I can see students being highly motivated by pulling their cell phones out and texting a response to a question. This would help shy students participate, motivate struggling students, and also help the teacher understand if students know the content or not.
